Kirigakure (霧隠れの里, Kirigakure no Sato; Literally meaning "Village Hidden by Mist"), infamously known as the "Village of the Bloody Mist" (血霧の里,Chigiri no Sato), is the shinobi village located in the Land of Water. Kirigakure has Kage as their leader known as the Mizukage. As far, there have been 5 Mizukage. An unusually high number of missing-nin seem to originate from this village and as such, a unique classification of ANBU known as hunter-nin are specifically tasked with eliminating these defectors.
10 years prior to the start of the manga, kirigakure was involved in the Third Shinobi World War. Years later despite the end of this war, Yagura's dreadful reign kept Kirigakure in turmoil and a many civil wars broke out. During this era, Kirigakure began using a new graduation ritual for their academy. Students had to kill the other students in order to move up in rank. Students who did exceptionally well during the graduation ritual became candidates for the Seven Ninja Swordsmen of the Mist, a group of ninja skilled with bladed weapons. The ritual however, was eventually discontinued after Zabuza Momochi slaughtered an entire graduating class, not yet being a student himself. Because of their efficiency on the battlefield, those with a kekkei genkai; bloodline limit were fielded in times of war. Because of this, they quickly became feared and killed out of concern that their existence would continue to bring out more war. This lead to family killing family and many clans becoming extinct. Seemingly for no reason other than desire to kill, the Kaguya Clan waged war on Kirigakure. Having underestimated their opponents' defences, they were surrounded and completely outmatched. The Kaguya Clan refused to back down, preferring to fight to the death for fun and were soon slaughtered.
Since Mei was appointed Fifth Mizukage, the village has taken a new stance and has begin working on their diplomatic relations and internal policies as well as their overall image while aiming to be recognised as a more open-minded nation.
Kirigakure had two tailed beasts in its possession: the Three-Tails and the Six-Tails. The Three-Tails was sealed within Yagura, though by the time Akatsuki went after it, it was roaming free. The Six-Tails' host, Utakata, was captured and had his tailed beast extracted by Akatsuki.
